The America Invents Act (AIA), signed into law on September 16, 2011, involves the most radical overhaul of the U.S. patent system in more than fifty years. Key provisions of the AIA will become effective on September 16, 2012, while others, notably the conversion from a first-to-invent system to a first-inventor-to-file system, will become effective on March 16, 2013.

Understanding the importance of educating inventors and patent practitioners concerning these dramatic changes, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has begun issuing guidance documents to facilitate implementation of specific provisions of the law. NYIPLA’s September 20 CLE Breakfast program will walk you through these guidance documents and will assist you in updating your patent strategies to take full advantage of these sweeping changes to the system.
